Program Overview

Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia’s Post Adoption Services Program utilizes the evidence-based Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) approach developed by Dr. Karen Purvis and Dr. David Cross. The Goal of the program is to help educate, support and provide tools and materials to help families maintain successful adoptive placements, especially for families who have adopted children from difficult backgrounds.

Three levels (Tiers) of support are available and families may work in collaboration with their social worker and/or Catholic Charities staff to determine which Tier of service would be most appropriate for them.

Tier 1

One day introductory training
FREE child care for children 12 & under
Topics include:

  • Attachment
  • Facilitating behavioral change
  • Developmental deficits that drive many behaviors
  • Interventions to help with
  • Sensory integration & playful interaction

Fall 2019 Dates and Locations Coming Soon!

Tier 2

Six week educational/support curriculum
FREE child care for children 12 & under
Topics include:

  • Healthy Touch & Play
  • Sensory Processing Issues
  • Trust-based Parenting
  • Attachment
  • Children from Hard Places and the Brain
  • Putting it all into Practice

Fall 2019 Dates and Locations Coming Soon!

Tier 3

Post Adoption Mini-Camp.

  • 7 week camp for children between the ages of 6-12
  • Entire family must attend
  • Dinner is provided as part of the program
  • Topics include: Trauma and the Brain, Trust Based Parenting, Attachment, Sensory Processing, Healthy Touch and Play

Further Information

  • Any family participating in Tier 1 or Tier 2 programs will receive:
    • The book “The Connected Child”
    • The TBRI Pocket Guide for Families
    • The Trust Based Parenting DVD
    • Fidgets
    • Other resources and materials
  • FREE child care is provided for Tier 1 & Tier 2 sessions for children ages 12 and under
  • Families will receive follow-up phone calls at various intervals to discuss progress, concerns, and receive guidance and feedback for continued service
  • In order to be eligible for these services families must fit one of the following criteria:
    • Finalized Adoption
    • Signed an Adoptive Placement Agreement (APA)
    • Child has been placed in home and an APA/Finalization will occur in 6-8 months
